Innovators In Music
A few years ago I co-produced, shot and edited a great music series that had us travel across the US and see some unique and influential musicians. In all we had Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame at the Highline Ballroom in NYC, Grateful Dead drummer/percussionist Mickey Hart at his ranch studio in Sonoma, CA, Sonic Youth did a show at the historic Uptown Theater in Kansas City, Billy Bragg performed at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, MA, one of my favourites Levon Helm played on his birthday in his barn in Woodstock, NY and Steve Earle did a great show at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, TN. We filmed them in performance and hanging out. They sat for interviews, showed off their Bonzi collection, and went to local radio stations for a little pre-show taste. In the case of Steve Earle, I spent the afternoon with him in the Village where he ate a cheese sandwich, tried out a 1954 Gibson SJ-200 at his favourite guitar shop, the recently closed Matt Umanov Guitars and told a funny story about getting pizza. This is a clip from our rendezvous one summer afternoon on Bleeker Street.
